Steve, I figured I would just come to the pinie woods and campout in you shop for a week or so
In fact I may be in your parts of the woods about the 23rd of May. I will call before just stoping in

The one area I know I could use more knowlage is voicing. I think I do ok from just being self developed from reading published info and studing my notes over the past 4 years. However I would like to take some instruction on this topic in the near future. But being out hear in the Desert of West Texas (the Lutherie Black Hole of America). There is nothing near by. So I am considering taking a vacation next year and attending a two week class at a good lutherie school some where in the South West. The only well known school I am aware of in the South West is Raberto-Venn and that is in Phoenix, Arizona. Does anyone know of others here in the South West. |

You might want to check in with LINT and see what special sessions if any they have coming up, I think they just had their master class not long ago. Also you might contact some prominent and succesful luthiers in your area and ask about personal "tutelage" for pay. Ya just never know when they might be interested in making a buck. |

Ervin Somogyi teaches an interesting looking course. I talked to him about this and I think he is going to be offering one in February. He is on the left coast though. Check out his site. It sounds pretty interesting. |

Michael, Brock beat me to it. I thought of Ervin's name also. He was the first "Master Class" lecturer at LINT, and he came and did his 2-day tonewood seminar. Voicing was part of the deal. I really don't think you could do better. Plus, there's lots to see out there in California. For one, you could go buy your own redwood tree. (har!) But for sure, you could go visit w/ John How. What a vacation! |

The ASIA Symposium will have at least one voicing workshop, and Ervin is going to do an abbreviated version of his wood choice workshop (4 hours). The voicing workshop is currently scheduled to be taught by Ervin, Al Carruth, and Steve Grimes. There's also an archtop intro taught by Linda Manzer, Steve Grimes, and Tom Ribbecke that will touch on voicing those instruments. |

Michael, I took Ervin's Voicing seminar/class in february 04. It is worth every penny and then some. He is a Master Luthier and realy knows how to teach as well. I can say that what I learned from him changed the way I approach building and will be with me forever. The end result is that you truely think about what and why you are doing what you do and on a higher level. Can't say enough good about the Man and/or the Class. You probably wouldn't be happy with a regular "school" as it is geared toward entry level persons. Ervin's Class was geared toward the experienced Luthier. I was the only one in the Class that WASN'T as "experienced" anywhere near my class mates ( they were all well known sucessful luthiers selling guitars in the 7-10k range). Just watching them and their approach to the many projects Ervin gave us was worth the price of admission alone.

You bet! Come on over, Michael. It won't take a week for me to learn ya what I know, more like a casual conversation! 
End of May, huh? Maybe you can bring some of that rainy weather you're so good at. We'll be needing it by then. |
